“Winter Olympics Kick Off With Power Outage Drama”

The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina faced a brief power outage just 10 minutes after the opening. The curling competition had started, but competitors had to pause due to the sudden loss of electricity.

While the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro was scheduled for Friday, some events had already commenced. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling were in progress when the power failure occurred at the Olympic Ice Stadium.

Officials halted play during the first end of the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds against Norway. Despite the interruption, Dodds was seen laughing during the communication between officials and venue staff.

Commentator Steve Cram from the BBC chuckled at the situation, noting the power cut at the stadium. The disruption caused a pause in play as the scoring screens went blank. However, after a delay of about five minutes, the lights flickered back on, and the crowd cheered as competition resumed.

Dodds and Mouat managed to secure an 8-6 victory, starting the round robin phase on a positive note. Mouat downplayed the disruption, describing it as a fun interlude, appreciating the venue’s atmosphere and quality of the ice.

UK Sport aims for a record-breaking Winter Games medal haul, with potential for up to eight medals following substantial investment from sources like the National Lottery and government funding. With over £32.5m invested in the current four-year cycle, UK Sport envisions a stronger British presence in winter sports.

Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from Beijing 2022, has transitioned into a leadership role within Team GB for Milan-Cortina 2026. She expressed optimism about the team’s potential to challenge traditional norms despite facing challenges accessing snow and ice compared to some competitors.
