Snooker Legend John Virgo’s Sudden Passing Shocks Fans

The unexpected passing of renowned snooker icon John Virgo has stunned the sports world today. His bereaved spouse has shared her thoughts with the Mirror, honoring the man affectionately known as ‘Mr. Perfection.’

In 1979, John triumphed over Terry Griffiths in the UK Championship after a late arrival for the final session resulted in a two-frame penalty. A prominent figure, he charmed audiences as a co-host on the 1990s game show Big Break alongside Jim Davidson, famous for his catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” Additionally, he excelled as a snooker commentator for the BBC.

Following his sudden passing at their residence in Mijas Costa, Spain, his wife Rosie Ries expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “We were almost celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary. Life without John seems unimaginable; he was my true love and closest companion.” Married since 2009, the couple’s relationship blossomed from a longstanding friendship.

John’s close friend James Malyon, present with Rosie, disclosed the cause of death as “a ruptured aorta – completely unexpected,” adding, “I’m in disbelief; this news blindsided us just five hours ago.” James, who played golf with John, emphasized their strong bond and reminisced about their shared moments.

Plans are underway for multiple commemorations of John’s life by his friends and family, commencing next week. Reflecting on the upcoming ceremonies, James mentioned, “In Spain, funeral arrangements typically progress swiftly. However, we have requested a brief delay. We are looking towards the end of next week for the services.” The gatherings will occur in Mijas Costa and the UK, paying tribute to the cherished memories of John.

A vibrant personality both in and out of the snooker arena, John, a three-time husband, was known for his distinctive waistcoats. Hailing from post-war Salford, his passion for horse racing and early years in snooker clubs shaped his career. Inducted into the World Snooker Tour hall of fame following his retirement in 1994, John’s fame extended through his involvement in the beloved game show Big Break and subsequent ventures.

Renowned snooker player Ken Doherty, who shared the commentary box with John, expressed profound sadness at the news, describing John as a mentor and dear friend. Fondly recalling their recent interactions, Ken highlighted John’s storytelling prowess and their shared love for Manchester United, emphasizing his irreplaceable presence in the snooker community.

John’s autobiography, Say Goodnight JV, delved into his struggles with gambling addiction, shedding light on turbulent times in his life. Despite these challenges, John remained active in the snooker scene, participating in sell-out events and captivating audiences with his charm and wit.

His passing has left a void in the hearts of snooker enthusiasts worldwide, with colleagues and friends expressing deep sorrow and paying tribute to his enduring legacy.
