Vodafone has introduced a novel method for internet access by launching a new Wi-Fi router that utilizes a 5G mobile signal instead of traditional copper or fiber cables. This innovative router is particularly beneficial for households without access to faster full fiber connections or for individuals seeking more flexibility, such as renters or students who frequently change residences.
One of the key advantages of this new router is its simple installation process. Since it operates on Vodafone’s network, there is no requirement for a technician to visit or undertake any drilling activities. Users can easily set it up by plugging it into a power source, turning it on, and instantly gaining internet access.
However, it is important to note that this system offers speeds of up to 150Mbps, which, while sufficient for activities like streaming Netflix, sending emails, and working from home, falls short of the speeds achievable with full fiber connections that can exceed 900Mbps. For instance, downloading a full HD movie through this 5G router would take approximately 8 minutes, compared to just 40 seconds with a fiber gigabit connection.
To assist consumers in selecting the most suitable option, Vodafone has launched an integrated availability checker on its website. By entering their postcode, customers can determine whether full fiber or 5G Broadband will deliver the fastest speeds in their area.
Vodafone previously provided internet access via 5G using the GigaCube device, which has now been replaced by this new router. Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, emphasized the importance of offering a fast and reliable alternative to households currently facing slow and unreliable broadband services. Vodafone aims to provide real choices to customers, with full fiber and powerful 5G Broadband options available based on availability and preference.
Additionally, Three, now part of Vodafone, offers a similar service, with Vodafone’s plans starting from £21 per month and Three’s home broadband priced at £11 for the initial nine months.
