Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with a common issue that arises when attempting to connect to the internet. The problem of online congestion is particularly troublesome during the evening hours, when households are simultaneously engaging in activities such as streaming movies, downloading files, and participating in video calls.
Typically, during working hours when fewer individuals are online at home, download speeds remain fast and reliable. However, as the evening approaches and more households come online after work, local networks can become overwhelmed, leading to a noticeable decrease in internet speeds.
To illustrate, broadband operates similarly to a motorway—increased traffic results in slower movement. Consequently, many households experience a significant decline in performance between 7 pm and 11 pm.
A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK areas most impacted by slowdowns during peak hours, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top of the list. According to the report, broadband users in this area witness a drop in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak times to just 75Mbps in the evening, representing a 55% decrease.
Other regions heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
In contrast, some areas in the UK experience improved internet speeds during peak hours. Newport emerged as the top-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie stated, “Have you ever noticed your broadband slowing down in the evening? Just like our roads, internet networks can experience congestion. We analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to identify the locations where broadband performance changes most at peak times. Customers in Wigan experienced the largest drop, with average speeds falling by 55% during the busiest hours.”
The report also highlighted regional variations across the UK, with Scotland ranking highest overall in terms of broadband performance improvements during the evening. Wales and the East of England also exhibited strong performance.
Conversely, the South West region experienced a decrease of approximately 15% in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Broadband experts suggest several ways households can enhance their home connection, such as positioning the router in an open, central location away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Additionally, providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
