The Reform leader reignited a heated debate from a decade ago by reaffirming his stance that race equality regulations should be eliminated to grant employers the freedom to reject employees based on their nationality. This proposal has raised concerns among experts, warning of the perilous path the UK could embark on, with one peer accusing Mr. Farage of promoting prejudice and bias.
Mr. Farage faced backlash in 2015 when he criticized the restriction on employers from selecting staff based on nationality, labeling it as “ludicrous.” He adamantly advocated for scrapping race equality laws back then and has not backed down from his position to this day.
Dr. Shabna Begum, the CEO of the anti-racism organization, the Runnymede Trust, cautioned against pursuing such a dangerous course, particularly in a climate where the definition of ‘Britishness’ is increasingly contentious. Dr. Begum emphasized that a person’s right to work should never be contingent upon their ethnicity or nationality, stressing the fundamental importance of granting equal employment opportunities regardless of race or background.
Green peer Natalie Bennett criticized Nigel Farage’s persistent endorsement of discriminatory practices, highlighting his unwavering commitment to promoting prejudice and discrimination over the years. Since the enactment of the Race Relations Act in 1965, it has been unlawful to discriminate against individuals based on their race, color, or national origin.
Commenting on Farage’s remarks, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak condemned the advocacy for blatant discrimination, describing it as morally reprehensible and counterproductive. Additionally, UNISON General Secretary Christina McAnea denounced Farage’s proposal to dismantle legislation aimed at preventing racial discrimination, emphasizing that such regressive steps would not contribute to economic growth or benefit the majority of the population.
A decade ago, during his tenure as UKIP leader, Mr. Farage faced criticism for advocating the removal of discrimination laws. He argued for the freedom to prioritize British-born individuals in employment decisions, asserting that employers should have the right to choose based on nationality.
