The Cabinet Office attributed this to an “administrative error” and stated that the papers were not meant for public consumption. A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office emphasized that all records are managed in compliance with the Public Records Act and undergo a thorough review process involving expert input. However, Graham Smith, the chief executive of Republic, a group against monarchy, criticized the decision to withhold the documents, particularly given Andrew’s loss of royal status amid ongoing controversies.
Smith argued that there is no justification for keeping the documents undisclosed, suggesting pressure from the Palace as a probable factor. He claimed that the royals aim to safeguard their interests by maintaining secrecy, especially regarding Andrew. Amid allegations linking him to Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew has consistently denied any misconduct.
The redacted minutes, which were briefly viewed by select journalists, reportedly contain discussions among senior palace and Foreign Office officials regarding Andrew’s travel as a UK trade envoy to countries like China, Russia, south-east Asia, and Spain. The papers also mention the Football Association’s potential funding of Andrew’s attendance at the Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal, highlighting changes in funding rules for royal travel.
