Minnesota deployed the National Guard following the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man by an ICE agent. Mayor Jacob Frey requested Guard troops to assist local police after protester Alex Pretti was killed near Nicollet Avenue. Pretti, an intensive care nurse who opposed Donald Trump’s immigration policies, was shot as protesters clashed with federal officers.
The National Guard was dispatched to both the shooting scene and a federal building where demonstrators gathered. Police Chief Brian O’Hara mentioned the limited information on the events leading to the shooting, noting that Pretti was believed to be a lawful gun owner with a permit.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated that federal officers fired “defensive shots” when a man with a handgun approached them and resisted disarmament. Witness videos of the incident showed Pretti holding a phone, with no visible weapon. The shooting occurred close to where another individual was killed by an ICE officer earlier, prompting public outcry.
Pretti’s family expressed sadness and anger, describing him as a compassionate nurse striving to make a positive impact. They denounced the administration’s portrayal of Pretti and criticized the ICE officers involved. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem mentioned Pretti’s interference with law enforcement but did not elaborate on his actions with the weapon.
The ICE agent who shot Pretti is identified as an eight-year Border Patrol veteran. Following the incident, President Trump criticized Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, questioning the lack of local police involvement and accusing them of inciting insurrection.
