“Family Launches The Family Chat Campaign for Online Safety”

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher decided to give their 11-year-old son a phone as he starts secondary school soon. Before doing so, they made sure to have important conversations with each other and with their son.

Giovanna, aged 40, emphasized the need for parents to manage and safeguard their children’s access to online content due to concerns about inappropriate material and mental health issues. Recognizing the prevalence of children receiving smartphones for Christmas, many families are now navigating the challenges and benefits that come with this technology.

To support families in addressing online device usage, a campaign called The Family Chat, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, has been launched. This initiative promotes open discussions within families at all stages of a child’s development and highlights resources like Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits for parents and children.

Giovanna expressed her appreciation for the campaign, noting that the resources provided by Tesco Mobile have helped enhance her family’s understanding and approach to online safety. With two other sons aged seven and nine who use tablets for communication and gaming, the Fletchers ensure that their children’s phone usage is monitored and restricted for safety.

By maintaining open dialogues with their children and setting clear boundaries, the Fletchers prioritize responsible smartphone use. They acknowledge the importance of limiting screen time, especially during family moments, and gradually introducing internet access to children as they mature.

Additionally, here are some tips to help children stay safe online:

1. Set up a child account to manage parental controls effectively.
2. Ensure the correct age is entered on the account for appropriate safety settings.
3. Activate safety filters on search engines to block harmful content.
4. Utilize parental controls provided in resources like the Little Digital Helps Toolkit.
5. Engage in ongoing conversations about online activities and smartphone usage to stay informed and address any concerns promptly.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasizes the importance of setting up new devices safely to protect children from potential online risks. She advises parents to prioritize establishing secure settings on their children’s phones to safeguard against overuse and exposure to harmful content.
