Barry Hearn Criticizes Conor Benn’s Sudden Departure

Barry Hearn criticized the lack of etiquette in Conor Benn’s departure from Matchroom to Zuffa Boxing without engaging in a conversation with Eddie Hearn. The 29-year-old officially announced the split and will now be managed by the Saudi-supported promoter led by UFC president Dana White.

Benn chose to part ways with the promoters who had been with him for a decade, even through challenging times like a failed drug test. Despite Eddie Hearn’s high praise for Benn after his victory over Chris Eubank Jnr, Benn opted for the opportunity presented by Zuffa, declining any discussions with Eddie Hearn, which disappointed Hearn Sr.

Expressing his dismay, Hearn Sr. remarked on the situation, emphasizing the importance of loyalty and teamwork in building a successful career. Benn’s move to Zuffa makes him the second prominent signing after Jai Opetaia, altering the course of opportunities previously envisioned by Eddie Hearn.

Barry highlighted the communication breakdown between Benn and the team, noting Benn’s preference for legal discussions over a face-to-face meeting. Despite being the mandatory challenger for the WBC welterweight title, Benn defended his decision, stating he could not ignore the substantial offer presented to him.

Hearn Sr. clarified that the issue was not Benn’s decision to explore other options but the manner in which it was executed. Emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and professionalism, Hearn Sr. expressed disappointment in the unfolding of events.
