A theatrical performance at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro over the weekend has faced criticism from attendees, leading to it being dubbed the “Willy Wonka Experience 2.0”. Disappointed families left the show early and are now seeking refunds, with some expressing disappointment and comparing it unfavorably to school productions.
The production company, World’s Biggest Productions, promised a unique staging of Frank L. Baum’s classic story, presenting it as a combination of pantomime and Cirque-style performance. However, parents interviewed by Glasgow Live have denounced the show as inappropriate, overpriced, and not as advertised, mockingly referring to it as “Willy Wonka Experience 2.0”.
Following the performance on December 27, numerous complaints flooded in, leading to the creation of a Facebook group titled ‘The Woeful Wicked Wizard of Oz – A Not-So Cirque Spectacular’, which quickly garnered 1,200 members. Despite the backlash, another show was scheduled for December 28 at the Hydro.
Attendees, including Carol-Ann Henderson, described the show as chaotic and misleading, with one father expressing disappointment after spending £297 on tickets for his family of five. Another audience member criticized the production’s quality, sound, and storyline coherence, highlighting various flaws in the performance.
Similar sentiments were echoed by spectators across the UK, with many expressing their dissatisfaction on social media platforms. The production company defended their show in response to criticism, emphasizing the circus elements and the show’s title as indicators of the performance style. They highlighted the differences in production values compared to Cirque de Soleil and emphasized the humoristic traditions of pantomimes.
World’s Biggest Productions and the Scottish Event Campus, owners of OVO Hydro, have been contacted for comments on the situation.
