An individual was fatally shot by law enforcement following a report of a two-vehicle accident. The incident led to the closure of a road overnight in Thetford. Norfolk Constabulary confirmed the fatality resulting from the police shooting near the crash site.
The authorities responded to a two-vehicle collision on London Road around 8.25pm on Sunday, December 28. One of the drivers reportedly left the scene holding a handgun.
Armed response officers arrived at the scene, and the suspect was shot by the police a short distance away. Despite emergency services’ efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at the location.
The A11 road remains inaccessible in both directions from the Thetford Ranges roundabout to the Brandon Road roundabout.
Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley stated, “We acknowledge the community’s concerns regarding this incident. While our armed officers respond to numerous firearms-related calls annually, instances involving police firearm discharges are fortunately rare.”
He added, “A comprehensive independent investigation is already in progress. We are fully cooperating with the IOPC investigation and will provide all bodyworn footage and 999 calls for transparency.”
The A11 road closure from the Thetford Ranges roundabout to the Brandon Road roundabout has necessitated diversions in both northbound and southbound directions by National Highways.
An investigation is ongoing to ascertain the complete circumstances surrounding the incident. Norfolk Constabulary has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
