With their 11-year-old son preparing for secondary school this September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a phone. Recognizing the importance of communication, the couple believed it was crucial to have open discussions with both each other and their son.
Giovanna, aged 40, expressed her concerns about the vast accessibility that phones offer and the necessity of managing and ensuring the safety of children in the digital age. She emphasized the significance of empowering children through dialogue to address issues like exposure to inappropriate content and mental health challenges.
During the holiday season, numerous children received smartphones as gifts, leading families to navigate the challenges and benefits associated with this technology. To support families in addressing these issues, a campaign called The Family Chat has been launched in collaboration with Tesco Mobile. The initiative aims to encourage discussions about online device usage within families, irrespective of their children’s ages.
Giovanna highlighted the value of participating in the campaign to enhance their family’s knowledge and understanding. She mentioned the pressure parents often feel to have all the answers, but emphasized the assistance provided by Tesco Mobile’s resources and online platform in simplifying the process.
The Fletchers, including McFly frontman and children’s author Tom, 40, have two younger sons aged seven and nine who utilize tablets for messaging and online activities. These devices enable them to communicate with family members, play games, and engage in video calls. Giovanna emphasized the importance of communication, especially when parents are away for work, and ensuring that children have the ability to contact them when needed.
When their eldest son transitioned to high school, the Fletchers provided him with a restricted smartphone, limiting its capabilities and internet access. They maintained an open dialogue with him, explaining the reasons behind the restrictions and fostering a deeper understanding among the children.
In addition, Giovanna highlighted the need to set boundaries for phone usage, such as prohibiting phones in the bedroom and during meal times to encourage family interaction. She emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children, aligning with their readiness level.
Moreover, she stressed the importance of online safety measures for children, suggesting steps such as setting up child accounts, specifying the correct age, activating safety filters, using parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online activity.
Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the significance of prioritizing the safe setup of new devices to protect children from potential online harm during periods of excitement and experimentation. Regular communication and monitoring of children’s digital habits were encouraged to ensure a safe online environment.
