Local Councils Granted Approval for Significant Council Tax Increases

Seven local councils have received approval to raise their council tax by over 5%. Normally limited to a 5% increase without a referendum, Shropshire, Worcestershire, and North Somerset councils are permitted to hike their share by up to 9%. Similarly, Trafford, Warrington, and Windsor and Maidenhead can raise theirs by a maximum of 7.5%, while Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council can increase their share by up to 6.75%.

Council tax typically escalates annually, with the average Band D council tax in England for 2025/26 standing at around £2,381. This announcement follows the Government’s allocation of approximately £78 billion over three years to local authorities across England.

To support councils facing funding cuts, a £440 million Recovery Grant uplift is being directed, with a total of £2.6 billion set to be available through the Recovery Grant by 2028/29. Local government minister Alison McGovern emphasized the importance of these financial reforms, acknowledging the financial challenges some councils still endure from the previous system. She stressed that decisions on council tax levels remain at the discretion of local authorities.

Many individuals are missing out on potential council tax discounts, ranging from 25% to 100% depending on personal circumstances. Eligibility for discounts can vary, such as a 25% reduction for single occupants or a full 100% exemption for individuals with severe mental impairments living alone or in all-student households. Residents are encouraged to contact their council directly to inquire about available discounts or support schemes like Council Tax Support or Council Tax Reduction for those on low incomes or benefits.

Residents may also challenge their council tax band if they suspect it is incorrect, potentially leading to refunds and lower bills. However, it is crucial to research thoroughly before challenging the band to avoid unintended consequences.
