“Starmer and Zelensky Strategize Before Trump Meeting”

Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with Volodymyr Zelensky today as the Ukrainian leader geared up for crucial in-person talks with Donald Trump. The anticipated meeting between the US President and Mr. Zelensky is set to address the resolution of the longstanding conflict between Moscow and Kyiv at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Sunday evening. Ahead of the scheduled meeting, Mr. Trump shared on Truth Social that he had a “very productive telephone call” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

As Mr. Zelensky traveled to Florida, he conversed with Mr. Starmer, who has been collaborating with European partners to form a Coalition of the Willing, committed to overseeing any potential peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. Expressing gratitude to Mr. Starmer for ongoing cooperation, Ukraine’s leader stated, “Thank you, Keir, for the constant coordination! I started my morning in Florida today with a detailed phone call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.” Discussions revolved around the upcoming meeting with President Trump, interactions with European allies, updates from the frontline, and the impact of Russian attacks, emphasizing the UK’s valuable support and commitment to continued communication.

A spokesperson from Downing Street disclosed, “The Prime Minister communicated with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy today. The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s steadfast backing for Ukraine and its pursuit of a fair and enduring peace. Both leaders condemned Russia’s aggressive and unlawful invasion, as well as the recent assault on Kyiv.” They both praised diplomatic initiatives and acknowledged President Trump’s ongoing involvement in securing peace, agreeing to maintain close communication in the days ahead.

In earlier conversations with European leaders, Mr. Zelensky emphasized the potential for significant progress before the New Year and urged allies to exert pressure on Russia to face consequences for their aggression. He highlighted the extensive attacks launched by the Kremlin during the Christmas week, targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Despite recent attacks in Kyiv resulting in casualties and disrupted power supply, Mr. Zelensky pressed for continued international pressure on Russia.

Amid escalating tensions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Kyiv and European leaders of hesitancy in constructive dialogue, suggesting a readiness for conflict. As Mr. Zelensky and President Trump engage in high-level discussions, they are expected to deliberate on a 20-point proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict. Mr. Zelensky expressed optimism regarding the peace plan’s readiness and outlined intentions to address economic agreements and territorial disputes with Mr. Trump, emphasizing the importance of US commitments akin to NATO’s Article 5.

Key elements of the peace plan, including territorial considerations, remain subject to further deliberation between the two leaders. The draft proposal includes provisions for US assurances mirroring NATO’s collective defense principle, with unresolved details requiring attention during discussions.
