Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped tragedy when he changed seats just before a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two of his friends. The incident occurred on Monday, resulting in Joshua sustaining minor injuries and his friends losing their lives. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
According to Joshua’s lawyer, the driver has pleaded not guilty, attributing the accident to brake failure. The journey initially started with Joshua in the front seat, but the driver requested him to move to the back seat due to visibility issues with the wing mirror. The seating arrangement changed during the trip.
The driver, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, has been charged with multiple offenses, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. The case has been adjourned to January 20.
Joshua, who was vacationing in Nigeria following a recent victory, mourned the loss of his friends who were integral members of his inner circle. Various figures from the boxing world, including Eddie Hearn and several former champions, expressed their condolences.
After being discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve, Joshua has not made any public statements regarding the accident. He was deemed fit to recover at home, as confirmed by officials. Joshua and his mother paid their respects at a funeral home in Lagos before the repatriation of their friends’ remains.
