“Warning: Risks of Using Unofficial Phone Chargers”

An urgent warning has been issued for users of Android and iPhone devices regarding the potential dangers of using unofficial chargers. With many new devices now being sold without chargers, consumers are turning to cheaper alternatives available online, such as on Amazon, priced at less than £8, significantly lower than official branded chargers. However, consumer advocacy group Which? has raised serious safety concerns about these cheaper options.

A recent investigation by Which? involved purchasing various chargers from online platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, and others, revealing alarming findings. Nine of the chargers were found to have poor manufacturing standards that could lead to electric shock risks, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.

One particularly concerning discovery was a counterfeit charger designed to look identical to an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on its packaging, priced at £11.99. Despite the appearance, the product failed safety tests conducted by Which?.

The investigation also uncovered chargers lacking mandatory UK safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry that could escalate the risk of overheating, fire, or explosions. This is not the first time Which? has highlighted the issue of unsafe electrical products being sold through online marketplaces.

Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences poorly designed electrical products can have and urged the government to enhance product safety laws and enforce stricter regulations on online marketplaces to protect consumers.

In response to these concerns, Amazon emphasized its commitment to customer safety, mentioning its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company assured that all products on its platform adhere to relevant laws and regulations and confirmed the removal of identified hazardous chargers. Amazon also stated its proactive approach in monitoring safety issues, recalling products when needed, and notifying customers accordingly.

B&Q also echoed a similar commitment to product safety, ensuring that recalled items are not available for sale on its Marketplace platform.

For consumers, the advice is clear: opt for chargers from official retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, or Samsung to mitigate safety risks. Though these options may come at a higher price, experts warn that the potential dangers associated with cheaper alternatives outweigh any cost savings.
