Sky subscribers are in for a treat as a new feature called Real Time is set to launch tomorrow. Timed perfectly for the upcoming World Cup kick-off, this upgrade aims to minimize the streaming delay that many users currently experience. The delay, which can reach up to 40 seconds on services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX, has been a source of frustration for sports fans, often resulting in spoilers from neighbors watching ahead. With Real Time, Sky is focusing on reducing this delay significantly to provide a more immediate viewing experience.
Initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024, the lower-latency streaming technology is now expanding to include BBC and ITV broadcasts, just in time for major events like the World Cup.
According to Sky’s statement, the Real Time feature, available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream powered by Sky OS, brings live sports closer to real-time by minimizing the latency between live action and on-screen display. This enhancement is designed to help fans follow matches with minimal lag and fewer spoilers.
To activate Real Time, viewers can opt-in during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option on their screens. The feature is accessible on both Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or dedicated channels such as BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.
