A mother and her two young children tragically lost their lives in a devastating house fire on Boxing Day. Fionnghuala Shearman, affectionately known as Nu, along with her seven-year-old daughter Eve and four-year-old son Ohner, perished as flames engulfed their residence on Brimscombe Hill near Stroud. Fionnghuala’s husband Tom, a serving officer with the Gloucestershire Police, made valiant efforts to rescue his family but remains hospitalized.
The authorities responded to the emergency call around 3 am, finding Mr. Shearman’s brave but unsuccessful attempts to reach his family inside the burning house. Detective Superintendent Ian Fletcher disclosed that the parents were awakened by the fire and tried to access their children in the rear bedroom, but the intensity of the blaze thwarted their efforts.
Mr. Fletcher explained that the father broke out through a bathroom window in a desperate bid to enter the children’s bedroom from outside, only to be blocked by the flames. Despite his courageous attempts to re-enter the house through various routes, the fire had already spread extensively. Emergency services arrived to manage the situation, with investigations indicating the fire likely started on the ground floor, ruling out foul play.
Fionnghuala, originally from Cheltenham and a business owner, frequently shared family moments on social media and shared a passion for running with her husband. The fire’s severity caused structural damage to the home, with the roof collapsing and floors giving way. Authorities emphasized that the incident was a tragic accident rather than a suspicious occurrence.
Expressing deep sympathy for the surviving family member, a fellow police officer, Mr. Fletcher acknowledged the profound grief and trauma he faced, having lost his loved ones during what should have been a joyous time. The Fire and Rescue Service encountered significant challenges battling the intense blaze upon arrival but worked tirelessly to manage the situation and support the recovery efforts.
The Gloucestershire Police Federation, representing officers, expressed profound sorrow over the unimaginable tragedy that befell their colleague and family. They emphasized providing extensive support to the affected officer and his devastated colleagues, acknowledging the outpouring of condolences and support from across the police community and the nation.
