Team GB has secured their first gold medal at the Winter Olympics as Matt Weston triumphed in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, 28, was a key contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and demonstrated his prowess by leading after the initial heats. His consistent performances, with times of 56.21 and 55.88 in the first two runs, followed by a swift 55.63 in the third heat, set him up for success on the final day. Weston’s exceptional final run, clocking in at a track record time of 55.61, led him to an emotional victory, celebrating with teammate Marcus Wyatt and Team GB coaches.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Weston, who had finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Wyatt, despite a stronger performance on the second day in Italy, clinched the seventh position with a total time of 3:45.77.
Expressing his elation after the win, Weston shared, “It means everything. It means a hell of a lot to me personally, I have worked so hard for this. Everyone back at home, my fiancée, my family, my friends, everyone that has sacrificed for me to be here. I have missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment, and it feels amazing.”
Team GB’s medal tally at the Winter Olympics has finally commenced with Weston’s success. On the podium, German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Reflecting on Weston’s performance, Lizzie Yarnold commented, “Matt Weston is traveling so fast and making decisions in tenths of a second; he doesn’t have any time to think ahead. He must be physically exhausted and emotionally overwhelmed. These athletes work three sessions a day, analyzing every detail, and it has paid off.”
