“UK Broadband Study: Alt-Nets Outshine Major Providers”

A recent study reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. According to a report by consumer advocate Which?, smaller alternative networks, often referred to as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.

The research indicates that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, are a common complaint among consumers. Slow download speeds and service outages are also prevalent sources of frustration for users. A significant 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing problems with their service in the past year, highlighting the widespread nature of connectivity issues.

Among the leading providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers encountering this issue. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection disruptions despite paying premium prices for their broadband services. Complaints about slow download speeds were raised by around a quarter of Virgin customers.

Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of their broadband service, with nearly a third indicating that it was not fast enough. Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service, which received low ratings from customers.

On the flip side, smaller UK providers continue to excel according to Which?. Zen Internet received high praise for its reliability, with customers reporting fewer issues compared to major brands. Community Fibre and Hyperoptic were also recognized for their impressive performance.

Among larger providers, Plusnet stood out for outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky. These findings align with previous research by Which?, consistently showing that smaller broadband companies excel in reliability, customer service, and value compared to major providers in the UK.

Which? now advises households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Ofcom’s broadband checker is recommended as a convenient tool for identifying available broadband networks.

The report lists both winners and losers in customer ratings. Zen leads with an 83% rating, followed by Hyperoptic (77%), Community Fibre (72%), Plusnet (71%), Vodafone (67%), EE (66%), BT (65%), Utility Warehouse (65%), Sky (62%), TalkTalk (59%), Virgin Media (59%), and NOW (54%).

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized the consistent underperformance of major broadband providers and urged companies to prioritize customer satisfaction. She highlighted the importance of quality broadband as essential and encouraged consumers to switch to better service providers with competitive deals available.

In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson emphasized the company’s ongoing investments in enhancing services and cited positive performance metrics from independent sources to support the quality of their broadband offerings.
