“Ontario Clinic Revolutionizes Perinatal Mental Health Care”

During her second pregnancy, Sharika Sadaf sought mental health support with a different approach compared to her first experience. She reached out to The Midwives’ Clinic of East York-Don Mills for additional assistance, emphasizing her concerns about postpartum depression. As a result, she promptly received a referral to a psychiatrist.

The Women’s Reproductive Mental Health Program, established at Michael Garron Hospital last year, offers mothers access to mental health services through the clinic, making it the first in Ontario to have an on-site psychiatrist. This initiative aims to streamline mental health care for new mothers, eliminating the need to navigate a separate hospital-based system.

The program has successfully aided over 150 mothers in managing their mental health throughout pregnancy and postpartum, significantly reducing the wait time for initial appointments from an average of six to nine months down to just 27 days. Urgent care appointments are also prioritized each week to prevent individuals from resorting to emergency departments for treatment.

Mackenzie Macht, a registered midwife at the clinic, emphasizes the importance of early identification of mental health concerns during prenatal care. She stresses that the perinatal period is a critical phase for mental health, often characterized by anxiety due to uncertainties surrounding pregnancy and childbirth.

Experts highlight the prevalence of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, affecting up to one in five women. Dr. Neda Askari, a psychiatrist at Michael Garron Hospital, emphasizes the underdiagnosis and lack of treatment for these conditions, which can have adverse effects on maternal health, pregnancy outcomes, infant development, and family well-being.

The community-based model adopted by the program aims to destigmatize seeking mental health care by integrating it into the existing prenatal and postpartum care provided at the clinic. This approach offers a more accessible and comfortable setting for patients, ensuring comprehensive medical and psychiatric care under one roof.

For Sadaf, the impact of this integrated approach has been profound, underscoring the importance of such support for all mothers. She believes that enabling mothers to embrace motherhood positively is essential for fostering a nurturing childhood for their children.
