NASA Abandons Swift Observatory Rescue Mission

NASA has decided to abandon the rescue mission for the Swift Observatory, leading to the inevitable re-entry of the telescope later this year. The partnership between NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies came to an end more than a month after the launch of the Link spacecraft, which was intended to save the observatory.

Katalyst revealed that due to difficulties in controlling the spacecraft, the decision was made not to capture Swift and elevate it to a higher orbit. Consequently, the telescope will descend through the atmosphere after more than 20 years of studying significant cosmic events like gamma ray bursts and supernovae. The anticipated demise is projected to occur in October.

To aid in relocating the telescope to a safer and longer-lasting orbit, NASA had paid Katalyst $30 million. However, heightened solar activity accelerated its descent beyond initial estimations. The rescue spacecraft encountered an uncontrollable spin shortly after its launch in early July. Despite efforts to stabilize its rotation, ongoing issues persisted with its alignment and navigation in orbit.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman acknowledged the disappointing outcome but emphasized the significance of the mission’s objectives. As a silver lining, Katalyst will continue operating the Link spacecraft in proximity to the telescope to showcase its potential for future rescue missions.

Swift, launched in 2004, had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to decelerate its descent. By Wednesday, it was orbiting at an altitude of 345 kilometers. Katalyst’s goal was to return the telescope to its original orbit of 600 kilometers, enabling further astronomical observations for years to come.

With the Swift rescue mission halted, the future of a potential rescue for the aging Hubble Space Telescope remains uncertain. Like Swift, Hubble has been experiencing orbital decay due to recent solar activities. The status of any future rescue endeavors for Hubble is currently unknown.
