The latest threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced intentions to launch a significant economic operation against Iran, were dismissed by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Araghchi, in a post on X, labeled Trump’s plan as a diversion from America’s internal crisis of increasing debt and interest costs. He emphasized that persisting with failed policies would lead to further defeat and animosity from Iranians, stating that U.S. economic terrorism poses a threat to the global economy and sovereignty.
Trump’s declaration of “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran came a day before Araghchi’s response. The U.S. president also cautioned countries about severe economic consequences if they support Iran in any way, urging allies to stand with the U.S. to counter the Iranian threat.
China, a major buyer of Iran’s oil, faces potential repercussions if the U.S. escalates economic tensions with Iran. When questioned about Trump’s threats, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that sanctions and pressure tactics are not effective solutions, calling for responsible actions and adherence to political and diplomatic approaches.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted that focusing on economic measures could reduce the necessity for major military actions against Tehran. Following the U.S. warnings, oil prices surged to their highest level in over three weeks, reflecting concerns over financial penalties aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict and oil supply disruptions.
‘Stuck in a cul-de-sac’
Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council, criticized Trump’s approach, highlighting Iran’s capacity to withstand economic pressures and retaliate against the U.S. and its allies. Shapiro emphasized the need for a comprehensive understanding that escalation is not unidirectional and that Iran has the means to respond effectively.
Iran has endured enduring economic sanctions for years, exacerbated by the Trump administration’s stringent measures since the conflict began. With thousands of casualties and failed peace negotiations, the expiration of a 60-day period for a peace deal signals a lack of progress, leaving both sides at a stalemate.
