“MPs Raise Alarm Over Lengthy PIP Claim Delays”

Benefit claimants are facing the risk of falling into poverty due to significant government delays, as highlighted by a group of MPs. A recent report from the Public Accounts Committee revealed that some individuals are enduring wait times of over a year for their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims to be processed.

The report, released today, disclosed that only 51% of PIP claims were handled within 75 working days during the 2024-25 period, falling short of the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) target of 75%. The committee criticized the lack of a sufficient plan by the Department to address these delays promptly, emphasizing the detrimental impact on claimants, potentially leading them into debt and poverty.

MPs shared instances of constituents waiting excessively long periods, including cases exceeding a year for claim processing. Despite the DWP downplaying these delays in their official statistics, they acknowledged the severity of the situation and pledged to take corrective action.

Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, expressed disappointment in the DWP’s service quality towards disability claimants, noting a worsened outlook for individuals awaiting assistance. The committee’s recommendations urged the DWP to furnish detailed information on waiting times, particularly highlighting the longest wait recorded in 2024/25.

PIP, the primary disability benefit aiding with additional living expenses for those facing challenges in daily tasks, has been under scrutiny following a significant rebellion last summer, prompting the government to reconsider eligibility restrictions. A review of PIP, overseen by DWP minister Sir Stephen Timms, is underway and expected to deliver findings in the coming months.

In response to the concerns raised, a DWP spokesperson emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare system and support claimants in transitioning to stable employment to alleviate poverty. The DWP is implementing reforms and modernization initiatives to streamline processes and ensure timely PIP award decisions, with the Timms Review focusing on enhancing the fairness and effectiveness of the benefit for the future.
