The leader of the Labour Party has issued a warning to Vladimir Putin, stating that the British Government is closely monitoring all Russian activities in UK waters following the sighting of a suspicious vessel in the Channel.
Anna Turley highlighted that Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader, is actively engaged with allies to address the situation, expressing her pride in his international efforts. A ship named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, detected 20 miles north of Guernsey in the early morning, as per tracking data.
Tavian is believed to be linked to Vladimir Putin’s ‘shadow fleet,’ which is allegedly used to circumvent restrictions on the Russian oil trade. Labour Party chair Ms. Turley emphasized the government’s vigilance in monitoring activities in the surrounding waters, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law and ensuring citizen safety.
Recent events unfolded within a day of the UK’s support for the US in intercepting a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander described the seized vessel, Marinera, as part of the shadow fleet sustaining Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
The UK’s collaboration with international allies, notably the US, to counter Russian sanctions evasion was underscored by Alexander, who commended the joint operation involving RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce. The operation, where US special operations aircraft were involved, saw the interception of the Venezuelan-linked vessel, previously known as the Bella 1, in the waters between Iceland and Scotland.
Mr. Alexander stressed the UK’s commitment to combatting illegal funding that supports conflicts like Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Cooperation with allies to address ongoing attempts to evade sanctions was deemed necessary, reflecting a collective effort to curtail channels financing Putin’s military operations.
