“Loblaw Reinstates Country-of-Origin Labels Amid Customer Backlash”

Loblaw has decided to reinstate country-of-origin labels on produce signs in response to significant backlash from customers. The controversy arose when shoppers noticed the absence of origin information on produce displays in stores.

Karla Hennig, a dedicated “Buy Canadian” shopper from Penticton, B.C., expressed disappointment at the omission of origin details, emphasizing the importance of knowing what one consumes. Many Loblaw customers across Canada expressed dissatisfaction with the policy change on social media, particularly given the timing coinciding with recent trade tensions and a renewed interest in supporting Canadian products.

Edmonton resident Karl Mueller criticized the lack of country-of-origin labeling at his local Real Canadian Superstore, highlighting the importance of supporting local businesses during uncertain economic times. Agricultural economist Ellen Goddard predicted Loblaw would reverse its decision, citing the heightened emotions surrounding trade uncertainty with the United States.

Following a CBC News inquiry, Loblaw announced its decision to reintroduce country-of-origin information on produce signs and to use a “T” symbol on shelf labels for American products affected by U.S. tariffs. While some shoppers cautiously welcomed this news, Mueller emphasized the impact ordinary consumers can have through their purchasing choices.

Despite initially defending its decision to remove produce labelling, Loblaw faced criticism for the lack of transparency. The grocer had received fines and warnings from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency earlier this year for incorrectly promoting imported food as Canadian, leading to regulatory troubles.

Some consumers have called for new federal regulations mandating origin information for bulk produce to enhance transparency in the grocery industry. Mueller and others advocate for clearer country-of-origin labeling to facilitate informed purchasing decisions for Canadian consumers.
