“From Struggle to Belonging: Caitlyn’s Vancouver Journey”

Caitlyn Moony shared her journey of relocating to Vancouver in a personal account. Originally from Johannesburg, she made the move in 2018 with high hopes. Coming from a background of working as a social researcher in South Africa, she sought better career prospects and financial stability, considering the limited opportunities in her home country. Vancouver, known for its reputation as one of the top cities to live in, seemed like an ideal choice, especially with family already residing there.

Upon arrival, Caitlyn was captivated by Vancouver’s natural beauty, from the majestic North Shore mountains to the tranquil rain showers in Pacific Spirit Park. However, as time passed, her initial admiration waned as she struggled to integrate into the city’s social and professional landscape. Lacking local connections and the elusive “Canadian experience” sought by employers, she found herself in a demanding job with meager pay, residing in cramped living quarters that added to her sense of isolation.

Her frustrations grew as she compared Vancouver’s pace of life and amenities to those of other cities she had lived in. The longing for a sense of community and belonging weighed heavily on her, accentuated by the challenges of forming meaningful connections in a place that felt unfamiliar and distant. The onset of the pandemic further intensified her feelings of isolation, prompting her eventual decision to return to London, a city she had previously called home.

Despite finding solace and vibrancy in London, Caitlyn realized that her time in Vancouver had subtly shaped her into a more introspective and grounded individual. The city’s laid-back yet confident demeanor had left a lasting impact on her, prompting a newfound appreciation for its unique charm and character. Now, with a deeper understanding and acceptance of Vancouver’s imperfections, Caitlyn expresses a desire to reconnect with the city, acknowledging the space it has carved out in her heart.

In a symbolic return, Caitlyn landed back in Vancouver amidst a winter storm, signaling a new chapter in her relationship with the city she once struggled to embrace fully. As she contemplates rekindling her connection with Vancouver, she reflects on the growth and self-discovery that stemmed from her time in the West Coast metropolis, ultimately seeking a sense of belonging and reconciliation with a place that has become an unexpected part of her journey.
