Co-op Stores Introduce “Flexi Checkouts” for Quick Service

Co-op is set to introduce innovative “flexi checkouts” in its stores to reduce waiting times for customers. These smart tills can seamlessly switch between self-service and being operated by cashiers based on the customer’s preference. Co-op aims to enhance convenience and efficiency for shoppers with this new approach.

Supplied by American financial and retail tech company Diebold Nixdorf, these advanced checkouts will be implemented in 150 Co-op stores by April. Apart from providing flexibility between self-service and cashier-operated modes, the screens will display price discounts, offers, and could potentially assist with parcel collections in the future. Co-op proudly declares itself as the first supermarket in the UK to adopt this cutting-edge technology.

David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support center, and innovation, emphasized the brand’s dedication to creating local stores that cater to community needs effectively. The new checkout technology replaces existing tills, offering the flexibility to accommodate both cashier-assisted and self-service transactions. This initiative aligns with Co-op’s commitment to enhancing the shopping experience and supporting physical store establishments in various neighborhoods.

Following the announcement of 18 new or revamped stores opening in the initial quarter of 2026, the first new Co-op store for the year is located in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire. Additionally, some stores are undergoing refurbishment, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated outlet in Ealing, London.

Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, highlighted the brand’s focus on establishing local stores as integral community hubs that offer quality products, value, and enticing promotions. The emphasis is on enhancing the shopping experience for members and customers alike, with a wide range of appealing deals on sought-after items.

Co-op has also unveiled plans to create thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years, with a significant investment of £70 million through its Levy Share service to generate 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030. This initiative underscores Co-op’s commitment to fostering skills development and creating opportunities for aspiring professionals.
