Brave Swimmer Missing After Rescue Attempt

A close friend revealed that a missing swimmer attempted to rescue a distressed woman before being engulfed by a massive wave in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. Matthew Upham, aged 63, remains unaccounted for following a rescue operation on Christmas Day morning, where multiple individuals faced difficulties while swimming in the turbulent waters. Despite the efforts of rescuers and medical personnel attending to those in need, both Mr. Upham and another man in his forties are still missing.

Reports suggest that Mr. Upham was close to reaching safety on the shore when he noticed the woman in distress and bravely swam back out to assist her. Described as exceptionally fit and a regular sea swimmer, Mr. Upham’s friend emphasized his selfless nature, noting that he immediately responded to help without hesitation.

Tragically, the friend recounted how Mr. Upham was overtaken by a powerful wave while trying to aid the woman, disappearing beneath the water’s surface. Despite his swimming proficiency and familiarity with the coast, Mr. Upham’s fate remains uncertain as hopes of a successful rescue dwindle.

In a statement posted on his business’ Instagram account by his nephew, Major Harley Upham, the family expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Matthew Upham. They extended gratitude to the emergency services, particularly the RNLI and coastguard, for their unwavering commitment and support during this challenging period.

Friends and acquaintances of the antiques dealer shared heartfelt messages, describing Mr. Upham as a kind-hearted individual and a source of positivity and inspiration. His business, Matthew Upham Antiques, renowned for its exquisite chandeliers and 18th-century furniture, had been a fixture in London for forty years before relocating to Budleigh Salterton.

As the community mourns the loss of a cherished member, the family has requested privacy and appreciated the outpouring of sympathy and support from well-wishers.
