Several cities around the world are canceling their New Year’s Eve celebrations due to credible threats of terrorist attacks. This decision comes after the FBI successfully prevented a planned bombing attack in Los Angeles scheduled for New Year’s Eve. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli disclosed that four suspects were apprehended in the Mojave Desert, east of Los Angeles, while practicing their scheme.
Authorities showcased surveillance aerial footage capturing the suspects handling a large black object in the desert. Before they could construct an operational explosive device, law enforcement intervened and arrested the suspects.
The individuals involved in the plot are identified as Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, 41, all residing in the Los Angeles area. While Los Angeles officials have not yet declared any cancellations for New Year’s Eve activities, numerous cities have opted to tone down their festivities.
In Paris, the scheduled New Year’s Eve concert has been called off following security concerns, as per local reports. Authorities recommended the cancellation to prevent potential chaos and overcrowding at the Champs-Elysées event location. However, a fireworks display is still set to proceed as planned.
Similarly, in Sydney, the New Year’s Eve pyrotechnics at Bondi Beach have been canceled after a recent shooting incident. The Waverley Council confirmed the decision, citing the need to prioritize safety. Event organizers expressed the importance of showing compassion for Sydney’s Jewish community amidst the circumstances.
Tokyo officials also canceled the New Year’s Eve countdown at Shibuya Station due to fears of potential attacks on large gatherings and the risk of stampedes. Concerns about public drinking were also raised by Shibuya Mayor Ken Hasebe.
While some cities are modifying their New Year’s Eve celebrations to enhance security measures, the global impact of these threats is evident in the adjustments being made to ensure public safety.
