Actor and disability rights champion RJ Mitte, known for his role on “Breaking Bad” where he portrayed a character facing cerebral palsy, passed away at the age of 34, as confirmed by authorities and his representatives on Monday. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa reported Mitte’s death around 1:30 p.m. at his presumed residence in Brownsville, Texas, without disclosing the cause, pending an autopsy.
Mitte’s portrayal of Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, in the acclaimed AMC series earned widespread recognition. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at three years old, Mitte revealed in a 2014 interview that his personal experiences with disability, physical therapy, family dynamics, and medical expenses mirrored the challenges his character faced, enhancing his performance on the show.
Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte ventured into acting in Los Angeles in 2006, securing minor roles in sitcoms before landing his breakthrough role on “Breaking Bad” in 2007 as a teenager. The series aired from 2008 to 2013, garnering critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.
Mitte’s representatives highlighted his commitment to disability advocacy and inclusivity, citing his efforts to challenge stereotypes and promote representation. Co-star Bryan Cranston paid tribute to Mitte on Instagram, praising his talent and positive energy. Mitte’s diverse acting credits included appearances in “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice,” in addition to his work as a producer in independent films.
Beyond his acting career, Mitte actively supported organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s as an ambassador and established the Mitte Foundation to champion charitable causes and community initiatives related to disabilities.
