“Comedians Struggle as SiriusXM Shifts to Celebrity-Dominated Channel”

Comedian Liz Miele recently faced a significant income reduction, mirroring the plight of numerous others in her field. SiriusXM terminated its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which showcased over 800 comedians, in favor of a new channel led by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This move has deprived Miele and many other working-class comedians of essential earnings and visibility, as affluent celebrity comics now dominate the platform. Miele disclosed, “Last year’s financial hardships were somewhat mitigated by Sirius XM for me. This change impacts numerous comedians who rely on this platform to sustain themselves.”

Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged that the revamped channel will offer opportunities for comedians at various career stages. However, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup reveals a contrasting reality. Before the transition, Raw Comedy supported over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per play. In contrast, the rebranded channel featured only 275 comedians recently, with the top 50 artists, including Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, receiving over 75% of the airplay.

Miele, a former top performer on the channel, expressed concern over the channel’s shift towards favoring a select few wealthy comedians. She emphasized the channel’s prior inclusivity and fair compensation for a diverse range of performers. Without platforms like SiriusXM, she fears that upcoming comedians will struggle to break into the industry as she and others did.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar highlighted the financial impact of this change, with his royalties dropping by 30 to 40%. Many Canadian comedians working in the U.S. rely on SiriusXM royalties to maintain their work visas, a situation that may force some to return home due to the loss of income.

Despite pressure from prominent comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, Maniscalco denied involvement in the decision to end Raw Comedy. SiriusXM clarified that the channel’s closure was due to underperformance prior to Maniscalco’s involvement. In response to the backlash, Maniscalco promised to collaborate with SiriusXM to provide diverse voices in comedy a platform on his channel.

Anwar remains skeptical of these promises, emphasizing the need for tangible support rather than mere statements. He calls for unity among comedians to address the industry’s poor pay and labor practices, highlighting the challenges posed by the recent changes.

The situation underscores the financial blow suffered by many comedians and the importance of solidarity within the comedy community during these uncertain times.
