A rare and intriguing feature of the natural world is the narwhal tusk, which can grow up to three meters in length. This tusk, an upper tooth that pierces through the whale’s lip on one side, is unique among mammal tusks for its perfectly straight growth without any curves.

An international team of researchers has uncovered the mystery behind the narwhal tusk’s straightness, attributing it to the distinct pattern of opposing spirals it possesses. The team, led by Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, was surprised to find two opposing spirals—one turning right and the other left—after conducting detailed research published in the journal Nature Communications.

The investigation commenced when Birkedal was approached by a colleague specializing in organic chemistry, intrigued by the directional differences in molecular structures. Curiosity sparked by reports of all narwhal tusk spirals aligning to the left in Greenland prompted Birkedal to delve deeper into the phenomenon.

Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s team utilized advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans to unveil the dual spirals present in narwhal tusks. These tusks, primarily observed in male narwhals, consist of dentine and cementum materials, lacking the enamel layer found in human teeth.

The discovery not only unraveled the mystery of the narwhal’s straight tusk but also holds promise in elucidating the structural principles of human bones and similar biological instances, according to Birkedal.

Renowned narwhal biologist Martin Nweeia from Harvard University expressed delight at the profound exploration of what he describes as “the most extraordinary tooth on the planet.” While commending the study’s efforts, Nweeia emphasized his research findings that highlight the tusk’s primary function as a sensory organ, contrary to defense or feeding purposes.

Looking ahead, Nweeia advocates for future research projects involving narwhals to incorporate off-season studies and collaborate with Indigenous communities, particularly in the Canadian Arctic where these mammals reside during summers. The utilization of traditional Inuit knowledge alongside scientific research is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of narwhals and their environment.

Both Birkedal and Nweeia underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge, as evidenced by the successful partnership between various fields that led to the revelations about narwhal tusks.
