“Woman Keeps Brother-in-Law’s Corpse for Financial Gain”

A court case revealed that a woman stored her deceased brother-in-law’s body in her residence for an extended period to profit financially. Upon entering the home of Debbie and James Bebout, authorities were met with a strong stench of decay and encountered a filthy environment resembling a horror scene. They discovered the skeletal remains of Michael Bebout, 64, who had passed away months earlier. Allegedly, Debbie Bebout retained the decomposing body to exploit his social security benefits.

Debbie Bebout, aged 64, is set to admit to a felony theft charge as part of a plea deal. Her spouse, James Bebout, 68, faced multiple charges, including theft, conspiracy, and mistreatment of a corpse. Although James Bebout claims ignorance of his brother’s body in the house, prosecutors argue it was implausible due to the pervasive odor in the residence.

Following a report from Bebout on January 16 about finding his deceased brother, the police arrived at their Pennsylvania home to discover only skeletal remains. Investigations indicated that Michael Bebout likely died in August 2024.

During a preliminary hearing, Greene-Washington Regional Police Corporal Adrian Poux described the home’s conditions as unbearable, with a pervasive scent of death that was overwhelming. Police Chief Will DeForte characterized the situation as one of the most appalling they had encountered, with the house filled with dog feces and cluttered like a hoarder’s dwelling.

Testimony revealed that Debbie Bebout had been posing as Michael’s caregiver to continue receiving his Social Security payments, amounting to $6,189 (£3,069). The funds were reportedly used for household expenses and groceries. Debbie Bebout agreed to plead guilty to felony theft, while James Bebout denied involvement, claiming ignorance of the scheme.

Assistant District Attorney Robert West argued that James Bebout must have been aware of the decomposing body in the residence, given its proximity to their living area. A felony theft charge against James Bebout was dropped, but he faces trial for conspiracy to commit theft and misdemeanor abuse of a corpse. He is currently detained at Washington County Jail on a $6,000 (£2,976) cash bond, with an arraignment scheduled for January 27.
