48-Hour Deadline for Covid Fraud Repayments

Suspected individuals involved in Covid-related fraud and those who improperly received public funds now have a limited 48-hour window to return the money or potentially face harsher consequences. The voluntary repayment opportunity, initiated in September, allows recipients to give back financial aid obtained through pandemic relief programs like furlough, bounce-back loans, business grants, and the Eat Out to Help Out initiative.

Failure to comply with the repayment deadline could result in hefty fines of up to 100%, along with possible interests, penalties, and even criminal charges in cases of suspected fraud or deliberate misuse. Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized the importance of returning funds that were not rightfully claimed, emphasizing that the money belongs to the community, including essential services like the NHS and schools.

Counter-fraud commissioner Tom Hayhoe urged individuals to take advantage of the voluntary repayment window to rectify their actions, warning of impending investigative measures that could lead to severe consequences such as business closures, bans on company ownership, legal proceedings, and potential imprisonment for serious offenders. The government’s Covid fraud reporting hotline has already received 300 allegations totaling £35 million, with a new fraud team set to commence investigations in the upcoming New Year.

Recent findings by Mr. Hayhoe revealed that a staggering £10.9 billion in public funds was lost during the pandemic, with only £1.8 billion successfully recovered. Despite challenges in reclaiming the remaining amount, efforts to recover funds paid out incorrectly are deemed necessary. Mr. Hayhoe criticized the previous government for neglecting the risk of fraud while focusing on combating the Covid crisis.
