“UK Acquires Cutting-Edge Mobile Artillery System”

The United Kingdom has acquired a cutting-edge weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute while in motion at speeds of up to 100km/h. Known as the RCH 155, this innovative mounted weapon can be affixed to a BOXER armored vehicle, boasting a striking range of 70km. This significant advancement comes as part of a £52 million agreement between the UK and Germany, enhancing the combat capabilities of British forces and drawing insights from recent conflicts, such as the one in Ukraine.

The revolutionary technology enables the RCH 155 to travel up to 700km without the need for refueling, a distance equivalent to driving from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike conventional artillery that requires stationary positioning before firing, this rapid-fire weapon can engage targets while on the move, making it a more agile and elusive threat to adversaries. Operated by a minimal crew of two individuals due to advanced automation features, the weapon can engage targets from any direction without the need for repositioning.

Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, highlighted the significance of this new artillery system for the British Army. He emphasized that the ability to fire on the move and engage targets from a distance of 70km, while swiftly evading return fire, is a crucial lesson learned from past conflicts, informing strategic procurement decisions and aligning with the objectives of the Strategic Defence Review.

Currently, soldiers utilize 14 Archer artillery systems as interim replacements for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. Through the collaborative contract between the UK and Germany, both nations will exchange test data and facilities, ensuring mutual access to state-of-the-art equipment.

Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, praised the joint demonstrator program as a testament to the Trinity House Agreement’s strength and ambition. The collaboration with Germany accelerates the delivery of advanced artillery capabilities for the British Army in a more efficient and cost-effective manner than either nation could achieve independently.

The introduction of the RCH 155 marks a significant advancement in mobile artillery, combining formidable firepower with rapid repositioning capabilities. This partnership not only equips soldiers with cutting-edge technology but also enhances the interoperability between UK and German forces, a crucial aspect of NATO’s collective defense strategy.

In a recent development, Defence Secretary John Healey issued a stern warning to Vladimir Putin, asserting that the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine remains steadfast. He emphasized ongoing investments to mobilize British troops swiftly in the event of a peace agreement. These remarks come amidst heightened security concerns, leading to the establishment of a new military intelligence service to address escalating threats such as cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and risks to global shipping routes.
