“Voters Push for Four-Day School Week Despite Government Opposition”

A significant number of voters are calling for schools to adopt a four-day week by extending the daily hours. Over 126,000 signatures were collected on a petition urging Members of Parliament (MPs) to consider this change, although the Department for Education (DfE) has expressed opposition to the proposal.

Advocates argue that a shorter school week could enhance teacher recruitment and retention, while the Government contends that it would burden parents with the need to arrange additional childcare. The issue will be discussed in Westminster Hall due to the high level of public support, as highlighted in a petition initiated by Steve Smith.

Joe Ryle, the director of the 4 Day Week Campaign, emphasized the potential benefits of a four-day week for teachers in addressing recruitment challenges within the education sector. However, the Government has rejected the idea, stating that schools are required to deliver a minimum of 32 hours and 30 minutes of education per week.

According to the DfE, reducing the school week to four days while meeting the minimum requirement would necessitate extending daily hours significantly. The Government also raised concerns about the negative impact on parents, who may face difficulties in managing childcare arrangements or adjusting their work schedules. This stance is based on the potential economic strain on families and the broader economy if such a change were implemented.
