In a recent statement, the British Beer & Pub Association emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to safeguard the future of pubs in the UK. The association has urged for discussions with government officials to address the challenges faced by the industry, with a new support package set to be announced soon.
The proposed measures are anticipated to mitigate the impact of upcoming increases in business rates and streamline licensing regulations. However, the BBPA advocates for a more substantial reform of business rates to provide better support to pubs nationwide.
Andy Tighe, Director of Strategy and Policy at BBPA, highlighted the discrepancy between government promises and actions regarding pub support. He emphasized the escalating costs and regulatory burdens faced by pubs, stressing the necessity for a fairer tax and regulatory framework.
Echoing this sentiment, Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, emphasized the critical need for reforming business rates to alleviate the financial strain on pubs. She shared concerns about the dwindling number of profitable pubs in her constituency and the adverse impact of tax changes on small businesses.
Amidst these challenges, there is optimism that the government will introduce measures to aid struggling pubs. Ms. Antoniazzi expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to supporting the industry and anticipated positive changes to be announced shortly.
In response to the industry’s concerns, an HM Treasury spokesperson reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting pubs, noting the previous £4.3 billion support package aimed at shielding businesses from substantial rate hikes.
