Human remains have been discovered in a tragic development in the quest for a snorkeler who went missing on New Year’s Day. Wen “Walter” Ren Gu, 32, disappeared at Ledge Point Beach, situated north of Perth in Australia, while engaging in crayfish diving with a group of companions on January 1. Various resources such as helicopters, drones, boats, jet skis, and multiple police divers were deployed in the search effort.
Despite extensive search operations, the young man remained unlocated, leading to a reduction in the search activities on Friday. Western Australia Police announced on Tuesday that human remains, believed to be Wen’s, were found washed ashore at Fence Reef Beach nearby. Although formal identification is pending, a police spokesperson mentioned, “Formal identification is yet to be completed but it is believed to be a 32-year-old man who went missing on Thursday. His death is not being treated as suspicious.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner as per 7News. Ledge Point Beach is renowned for its white sandy beaches and is a popular spot for fishing activities. Wen and his friends entered the water around 10 am on New Year’s Day, with his disappearance reported to the police by his friends around 3 pm after a search on the busy beach.
Reports suggest that Wen, who had been temporarily residing in Western Australia and was in the process of applying for a study visa, was described as a cheerful and sociable individual. Following his disappearance, local residents, including Jay Barrett, joined in the search efforts. Barrett highlighted the proximity of the reef to the shore cautioning about potential hazards and the tragic nature of the incident.
A friend of Wen expressed a desire to continue the search efforts despite the official search being called off, urging anyone with information or footage to come forward. The friend emphasized the importance of community support in the ongoing search mission.
