Idris Elba has recently spoken out after being knighted in the New Year’s honors list. The 53-year-old actor, famous for his portrayal of DCI John Luther in the BBC crime series, has been recognized for his contributions to youth causes.
Knighted as Sir Idris, he has been actively involved in addressing youth violence, initiating the Don’t Stop Your Future (DSYF) program. This initiative collaborates with local community organizations to combat knife-related crimes.
Moreover, Sir Idris, along with his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba, established the Elba Hope Foundation, a global charity that supports projects emphasizing education, economic opportunities, and entrepreneurship for empowerment.
Expressing his gratitude for the honor, Idris emphasized the dedication of young talents and their resilience, driving the efforts of the Elba Hope Foundation. He stressed the need for sustained support for young individuals and the collective responsibility to offer alternatives to violence.
In 2024, the actor called for a ban on machetes and zombie knives, meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer to launch an anti-knife crime coalition. He further engaged with Sir Keir and the King in the BBC documentary “Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis,” where he interacted with various stakeholders to understand the rising knife crime trends.
Sir Idris’s foundation partnered with The Prince’s Trust in 2024 to aid young people pursuing careers in the creative industry through the Creative Futures project. This initiative provides free courses to equip individuals with the necessary skills and confidence to seek employment or start businesses in creative fields.
Having also collaborated with The Prince’s Trust during his teenage years, Sir Idris has maintained a close relationship with the charity throughout his career. His diverse portfolio includes roles in acclaimed projects such as Luther, The Wire, portraying Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” and featuring in the Marvel and DC cinematic universes.
Additionally, he made his directorial debut with “Yardie” in 2018 and showcases his musical talents as a DJ under the alias DJ Big Driis or Idris, alongside his R&B singing pursuits.
