“Siblings’ Revelation Inspires Emotional Family Memoir”

Donna Morrissey and her four siblings were sharing stories and drinks one evening when she had a revelation. In their childhood in Newfoundland, Morrissey and her sisters primarily stayed indoors with their mother, while her brothers engaged in outdoor activities with their father. This pattern persisted into adulthood, leading to Morrissey’s realization of an undiscovered side of her father as her brothers recounted stories about him.

This revelation inspired Morrissey’s latest book, titled “Tell It to the Water: Five Siblings Tell of Their Father’s Grief and His Struggle Back to Hope.” While the focus is on their father’s grief following their mother’s death from cancer, the book also delves into other tragic events, such as the loss of Morrissey’s brother, Ford, in a workplace accident decades ago.

Reflecting on the process, Morrissey shared that delving into her siblings’ untold stories was emotionally challenging, unlike her previous fictional works. Collaborating with her siblings to capture their viewpoints and emotions for the book involved in-depth conversations and occasional disagreements, ultimately strengthening their bond.

Dr. Simon Sherry, a psychologist at Crux Psychology in Halifax, discussed the enduring nature of grief, emphasizing the ongoing emotional connection individuals maintain with deceased loved ones. Morrissey hopes that by sharing their family’s experiences, readers will find a mirror to reflect on their own family dynamics and perhaps inspire others to document their family history.

Despite the cathartic release the book provided, Morrissey acknowledges that their family’s journey continues to evolve, fostering a deeper appreciation for each other amidst life’s challenges.
