The tallest man in the world, Sultan Kosen, stands at an impressive height of 8 feet 2 inches (243cm) and requires three beds to sleep comfortably. Holding the title of the world’s tallest living man since 2009, Sultan surpassed his competitors to secure the Guinness World Record.
At 43 years old, Sultan, a former farmer, succeeded the 7 feet 8.95 inches tall Xi Shun over two decades ago as the first person to exceed eight feet in height. Growing up in Ankara, Turkey, Sultan realized his exceptional height early on, measuring over 5 feet by the age of nine.
Despite his towering stature, Sultan faced challenges both physically and mentally, recalling how he was ostracized by his peers during his youth. He shared his struggles with his vision and social isolation, expressing feelings of embarrassment and discontent with his childhood.
As he continued to grow, Sultan’s concerns for the future intensified, fraught with fears and uncertainties about his health and life prospects. Subsequent medical investigations revealed a tumor in his pituitary gland, believed to be the cause of his extraordinary height and vision impairments.
Following successful surgeries to address the tumor, Sultan’s life took a pivotal turn in 2008 when he was officially recognized by Guinness World Records for his exceptional height, largest hands, and feet globally. Embracing the validation, Sultan felt a sense of acceptance and relief from his past traumas.
Despite overcoming his childhood challenges, Sultan still faces practical difficulties due to his height, especially during travel. His towering stature necessitates specific accommodations, restricting his choices of transportation and lodging. He requires spacious vehicles and customized sleeping arrangements, often needing multiple beds to accommodate his extraordinary height.
While Sultan now enjoys global fame and a wide circle of friends, his title as the tallest man faced a potential challenge in 2023 when Sulemana Abdul Samed from Ghana was reported to surpass his height. However, discrepancies in measurement methods later clarified the true extent of Sulemana’s height.
