Promising Belfast Boxer Paul McCullagh Jr. Remembered

The boxing community is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior, a talented fighter from Belfast. McCullagh, known as ‘The Irish Drago’, had a successful amateur career, winning the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and representing Ireland in international competitions.

With a professional record of two victories, McCullagh last fought in April 2021, showcasing his skills at both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.

Hailing from a boxing lineage, McCullagh was the grandson of the esteemed Belfast boxing coach, Paul McCullagh, who trained renowned fighters such as Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell before his passing in 2018.

His father, also named Paul, a former champion amateur boxer and professional referee, shared the family’s passion for the sport. The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) expressed profound sadness over McCullagh’s untimely death, highlighting his achievements and contributions to the boxing community.

Former teammates and trainers paid heartfelt tributes to McCullagh, remembering him fondly for his talent and camaraderie. The Belfast boxing fraternity joined in mourning the loss of a promising athlete, offering condolences to his family, friends, and the boxing clubs he represented.
