An 11-year-old boy uttered three chilling words after reportedly shooting his father to death over the confiscation of his Nintendo gaming console.
Douglas Dietz, aged 42, was discovered deceased with a gunshot wound to the head following the tragic incident in a serene community in Duncannon Borough, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday morning. The boy, Clayton, now faces charges of homicide.
According to court records, the wife of Mr. Dietz was awoken by a loud noise and a smell resembling fireworks in the bedroom, just before the boy entered the room and exclaimed, “Daddy’s dead.”
Upon arrival, state troopers overheard Clayton confessing to his mother, “I killed Daddy.”
Celebrating his 11th birthday, Clayton allegedly became furious after his father took away his Nintendo Switch a few days earlier. The court affidavit revealed that Jillian, the wife, was beside Mr. Dietz in bed and only realized the situation upon turning on the lights and finding blood seeping through the sheets.
Subsequently, Clayton entered the room and started shouting, while Jillian desperately attempted CPR on Douglas while awaiting emergency services. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.
During an interview with the police, Jillian mentioned that the couple, who adopted Clayton in 2018, had sung Happy Birthday to him the night before, but the situation escalated when they instructed him to go to bed.
As per the affidavit, the father stored the family’s firearm in a secured drawer, but Clayton admitted to finding the key, unlocking it, and searching for his Nintendo Switch.
Clayton confessed to “taking the gun from the safe, loading it with bullets, and approaching his father’s side of the bed,” before releasing the safety and firing at him.
The 11-year-old allegedly told officers that he had not considered the consequences of shooting his father. Clayton was apprehended on the day of the incident and charged with criminal homicide, with a preliminary court hearing scheduled for January 22.
Local media reported that his parents had reached out to his school in the months leading up to the event, seeking assistance for their son, who has autism and exhibited escalating uncontrollable behaviors such as sexual harassment, physical aggression, and theft.
Despite the parents’ efforts, they were denied help as Clayton did not meet the required criteria. A neighbor mentioned that the Dietz family appeared friendly and reserved, and the incident came as a shock.
Following the shooting, the Susquenita School District in Perry County issued a statement offering support to students, acknowledging the potential impact of such events in the close-knit community.
