“Manhattan S4-R: Sky Q-Style Upgrade Sans Monthly Fees”

A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos for those seeking a Sky Q-style upgrade without monthly fees. This device offers features similar to Sky’s premium service, including recording programs, pausing live TV, and storing content on its built-in hard drive.

The key advantage of the Manhattan S4-R is its cost structure. Unlike Sky Q, which requires monthly payments, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any ongoing fees once purchased. This device utilizes Freesat, leveraging existing satellite dishes to deliver free TV channels directly to viewers. Channels available include BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.

With a user-friendly interface, built-in search features, and access to over 60,000 hours of on-demand entertainment, the Manhattan S4-R supports various apps such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat provides a completely free viewing experience.

The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently priced at £219.99 and can be purchased from retailers like Argos and Amazon. Larger 1TB and 2TB versions are expected to be released soon, reflecting strong demand as indicated by Argos listing the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted the S4-R’s enhancement in recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous limit of two channels. Positioned as an affordable alternative for households seeking flexibility and choice, the S4-R competes with subscription TV services.

Another disruptor in the TV market is the Pleio puck, offering free streaming access to TVs without requiring an aerial. Priced at £99.99, the Pleio puck includes a gaming controller and grants access to over 200 online games after initial stock shortages.

Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction for the upcoming World Cup, with Sky Glass Air TV starting at £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model with a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar can expect to pay from £11 per month.
