A man from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation has been handed a six-year prison sentence for what a judge described as “horrific” actions. Blaisen Nicotine, aged 27, admitted to sexually touching two minors and sharing child pornography.
During Nicotine’s sentencing at Battleford Court of King’s Bench, Justice Brenda Hildebrandt condemned the acts as appalling and unacceptable. One incident took place at a school within the Red Pheasant Cree Nation, as reported by the RCMP following a tip-off from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.
According to the prosecution’s case, Nicotine was caught filming himself masturbating in a bathroom stall before involving a young student and later distributing the video on social media. Another victim, a 13-year-old who misrepresented his age as 18 online, engaged in a series of sexual encounters with Nicotine over ten days.
The court heard that Nicotine’s troubled upbringing, marked by violence, substance abuse, and family trauma, influenced his actions. In a statement, Nicotine expressed remorse for his behavior, seeking forgiveness and a chance to reform.
The prosecutor and defense counsel jointly recommended the six-year prison term, citing Nicotine’s challenging background as a mitigating factor. Despite acknowledging the leniency of the sentence, the judge emphasized its appropriateness given Nicotine’s guilty pleas and the avoidance of further trauma to the victims.
After factoring in time already served, Nicotine has approximately three years and nine months remaining on his sentence.
