The mayor of The Pas has decided to step down from his position and will not seek re-election in the upcoming local election. Andre Murphy, who was elected as the mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday night, stating that he is resigning immediately.
CBC News confirmed that Murphy has resigned and will not be running for re-election in the fall, leaving the town without a mayor for approximately nine weeks until new councils are elected on October 28. Deputy mayor Carrie Atkinson will take on most of Murphy’s responsibilities until election day.
Murphy explained that he and his family made the choice to resign last week, and he informed the council of his decision on Monday. Initially considering running for another term, he ultimately decided against it over the summer.
Expressing his commitment to representing the community, Murphy emphasized his desire to spend more time with his family, including children and grandchildren residing in eastern Canada. Recognizing The Pas as his long-time home, he emphasized the bright future of the community and the capable hands of the town’s council and administration.
Reflecting on his tenure as mayor, Murphy highlighted accomplishments such as fostering closer ties with neighboring communities, addressing barriers for locals, and securing significant grants for recreational and infrastructural development.
