“Boy Injured by E-Bike Sparks Advocacy for Stricter Regulations”

A six-year-old boy in Steinbach, DeMari Disna, is confined indoors during the final weeks of summer following an accident involving an electric bike. DeMari was struck by a youth riding an e-bike while he was out with his older sisters and friends on a walking trail near a soccer park close to his residence. His mother, Shannon Broesky, took him to Bethesda Regional Health Centre, where he endured a 19-hour wait for a soft cast and was diagnosed with fractures in his left leg.

DeMari was subsequently transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg for a hard cast. Despite his resilience, his mother mentioned that he is already feeling bored due to his energetic nature and recent birthday gifts of a trampoline and bike. The incident, witnessed by DeMari’s sisters, involved a teenage girl reportedly colliding with him on the e-bike.

Following the incident, Broesky is advocating for stricter regulations concerning e-bikes, expressing her concerns after witnessing the impact on her son. The Manitoba government is currently working on legislation related to battery-powered bikes and scooters. Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor conveyed well wishes for DeMari’s recovery and emphasized the government’s commitment to reviewing and updating regulations to enhance safety.

Steinbach’s mayor, Earl Funk, expressed dismay over the injuries sustained by DeMari and highlighted the potential dangers of e-bikes in inexperienced hands. The mayor emphasized the importance of implementing regulations and enhancing public education on e-bike usage. Meanwhile, Morden has already established its own bylaws, including helmet requirements and adherence to traffic rules for e-vehicles.

Morden’s mayor, Nancy Penner, stressed the need for provincial guidance on age restrictions for e-bike and e-scooter usage to ensure consistency across municipalities. She acknowledged the challenges posed by differing rules between cities and advocated for a unified approach to regulations. Broesky, while considering reporting the incident to the police, emphasized the importance of accountability and forgiveness in such situations, aiming to avoid hostility and promote understanding.
