A prosecutor has alleged that a former gang leader masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of renowned hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for an incident involving his nephew. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, aged 63, faces a murder charge in Clark County, Nevada, for allegedly orchestrating the killing of Shakur, a prominent figure in the rap scene at the time, in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip.
During the trial’s opening statements in a downtown Las Vegas courtroom, prosecutor Binu Palal informed the jury that Davis ensured the shooters were prepared to carry out the attack when the opportunity for revenge arose. The prosecutor referenced recent public statements by Davis where he detailed his involvement in the long-dormant case.
In response, defense attorney Michael Sanft emphasized the lack of concrete evidence after three decades and questioned the credibility of Davis’s accounts provided in interviews and his book. Sanft pointed out the absence of factual support for the information shared by Keffe D.
The fatal shooting of Shakur further fueled the image of violence associated with hip-hop culture during the era of “gangsta” rap, contributing to the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry of that period.
Authorities revealed that Davis had long been a suspect in the murder but lacked substantial evidence until his self-incriminating public statements in 2023. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, is anticipated to last up to six weeks and may include testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records and a key figure present during Shakur’s shooting.
Allegedly, Davis, acting as the orchestrator, sought revenge following a confrontation between Shakur’s entourage and Davis’s South Side Compton Crips gang members and associates of Knight’s Mob Piru gang at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas. The altercation stemmed from tensions between the two Los Angeles gangs.
Davis reportedly provided the murder weapon to two individuals in a white Cadillac to track down Knight and Shakur’s vehicle after the casino altercation. The shooting occurred when they caught up with the victims’ car, resulting in Shakur’s death six days later and a minor injury to Knight.
Although the murder investigation had stalled for years, Davis’s statements in 2018 reignited interest in the case, leading to his arrest. The trial aims to uncover the truth behind Shakur’s tragic demise, which continues to captivate fans and observers alike.
