After watching a television program showcasing a total solar eclipse in Antarctica in 2003, Stephen Bedingfield from Yellowknife was inspired to pursue witnessing every eclipse possible. This week, accompanied by his spouse, he has reached Spain to witness his 13th total solar eclipse, which marks his 23rd eclipse including partial ones, with an anticipated duration of about two minutes.
According to Bedingfield, a total solar eclipse is a remarkable event comparable to seeing the Great Barrier Reef, Niagara Falls, and Mount Everest all at once. He emphasized the unique magnificence of this natural phenomenon, describing it as unparalleled.
A total solar eclipse is set to occur on Wednesday, visible across Greenland, Iceland, Spain, northern Russia, and a small section of Portugal. While Canada will not witness the total eclipse, there will be an opportunity to observe a partial solar eclipse, during which the moon will partially obscure the sun.
Bedingfield highlighted the celestial alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth during a total solar eclipse, creating a breathtaking spectacle that showcases the wonders of the solar system. He expressed his delight in the community of eclipse chasers he has encountered during his two decades of eclipse chasing, forming lasting friendships and shared experiences.
Despite lasting only a few minutes, Bedingfield noted that the eclipse significantly alters the environment, causing a rapid drop in temperatures and changes in bird behavior, creating a holistic environmental experience.
Christa Van Laerhoven, the vice president of the Yukon Astronomical Society, emphasized the importance of using proper eye protection to safely view the eclipse. She recommended approved solar eclipse glasses or DIY alternatives such as creating a pinhole projector using household items like an empty box, white paper, and foil. Van Loerhoven also suggested using a leafy tree with holes in its leaves as a natural pinhole projector, cautioning against looking directly at the sun during the eclipse due to its potential dangers.
